Issey Miyake created a most fantastic collection entitled Pleats Plisse, which, as you can guess from the name, offered a study on pleats.

When I was in the mountains of China, I bought a pleated skirt from the Yao minority group that has lived there for centuries.

But pleats have existed even longer than that.
